So you’ve read Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead…

What’s next?

Are you interested in fiction that shows how people take charge of their environment and are unapologetic about making money or (gasp) shutting down companies?

Try Cash McCall by Cameron Hawley. This is the story of what would now be called a M&A specialist who is vilified even as he creates value and acts honorably. A pleasant read. As a side benefit it shows a theme in other of Hawley’s books, that is the perniciousness of miscommunications and wrongly assumed motives. Set in the early 1950s. It was made into an acceptable movie starring James Garner and Natalie Wood, but the book is much better.

For an older and yet very satisfying read, consider Ruined City (also titled Kindling) by Nevil Shute. Set in the late 1930s (it was written in 1937) this is the story of a merchant banker who decides to bring a town back to life through business. It has some artifacts of its time (not at all politically correct) but a very satisfying read.

Shute is best known as the author of A Town Like Alice and On The Beach. Alice also stands out as a story about people taking charge of their world and making a difference through their own efforts.
