Occam’s Legislation
Most have heard about Occam’s Razor, which can be paraphrased as “if there there are two or more explanations for something, the simplest one is more likely to be correct.”
I’d like to propose Occam’s Legislation — if there are two laws that could be passed to solve a problem, the simplest is to be preferred.
A case in point — all the hot air about health care reform has crowded out the simplest change that would realign the landscape: remove the tax break for employer-paid health insurance, and replace it with a tax deduction for individuals.
This will realign health insurers towards the patient without intermediaries and will end 50 years of discrimination against small business and the self-employed.
It will be nearly revenue-neutral, and will require NO administrators or bureaucracies.
If you coupled that with the ability to buy insurance across state lines, the landscape would shift overnight.
It will empower individuals and families to balance their needs, wants, and budgets.
No wonder this proposal has been shut out — it transfers power from government and business to you, restoring your independence from bureaucrats.
Common sense.
