Closed borders, Open doors
Much of the hot air about immigration centers around the supposed tradeoff between securing the border and allowing new candidate citizens. This is a false dichotomy.
It is completely consistent to have locks on your doors while simultaneously being a welcoming and gracious host. No sane person permits unknown people to climb into their house through a window, and we should stop being an insane country.
This means closing the borders with strong penalties for illegal border crossers while providing a new Ellis Island that is open to all.
Much as gracious hosts answer the doorbell with a smile, we should return to extending the welcoming hand to those who knock at the door and ask to be admitted.
Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…
